A: JCS 6th Grade Camp is a privilege reserved for currently enrolled 6th grade students at JCS. Other JCS students, 6th grade students from other schools, and siblings who are not currently enrolled 6th grade JCS students are not permitted at this camp.
Q: Is 6th Grade Camp an overnight camp?
A: Yes, this is an overnight camp (2 days, 2 nights).
Q: May my child only attend the daytime portion of the camp?
A: No. The Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is a secure, locked camp. No one is permitted "in-and-out" privileges while camp is in session.
Q: Is there a bus or other transportation to/from camp provided?
A: No. Parents must drop their student off at 9:30 AM on the first day of camp (and stay to check-in their child at the camp facility), and pick up their student at 10:00 AM on the last day of camp. Or, parents can make arrangements and authorize another to drop off/pick up their child. Carpools are encouraged!
Q: Are there any items that my student must leave behind?
A: Yes: Do not bring anything that uses electricity; Do not bring any weapons (this includes knives); Do not bring any medications in your luggage (not even over-the-counter medications). All medications need to be registered, and given to the camp coordinator at registration on the first day of camp. You are also cautioned to only send your student with an inexpensive or disposable camera.
Q: My student needs regular medication (prescription or over-the-counter). How can I be sure it will be administered?
A: IROEC has a nursing staff who manage all health concerns as well as administration of medications. You will need to provide the completed paperwork in the student packet and give to the camp coordinator upon arrival at camp. Medications must be clearly marked with the student's name and the name of the medication (prescriptions must be in their original container with the prescription printed on the container; Over-the-counter medications, including vitamins, must be in original packaging with student's name written on the package). This is required by state law - your student may not have any medication, including OTC or vitamins, in their luggage or on their person (an exception is allowed for emergency/rescue inhalers).
Q: My student has an IEP and/or a 504 plan. Will accommodations and/or modifications be made for the outdoor education program?
A: When you register your student online, you will be asked to indicate if your student has an IEP and/or 504 plan. Once registered, we consult with the student's IEP team and/or 504 coordinator to learn what accommodations and/or modifications to the outdoor education program are needed. Julian Charter School provides all appropriate accommodations and/or modifications for outdoor education as required by the student's IEP and/or 504 plan.
Q: Why does JCS prohibit cell phones?
A: There are two reasons for this. One is philosophical, the other is practical. Philosophically: This is an outdoor education camp, with an emphasis on an educational, overnight camping experience. Cell phones and other electronic devices distract from the educational environment and rob the student of the self-responsibility experiences that come with the camp environment. Practically: There have been unfortunate issues publicized in the media of children using phone cameras, which are easy to conceal, to take clandestine photographs of others in school or public restrooms or while changing clothes. Not only is this extremely inappropriate behavior, it is illegal, and neither the IROEC nor JCS want to create an environment where anyone can be victimized in this way. If you have a compelling reason why your student must have a cell phone during camp, please discuss your concerns with the JCS camp coordinator.
Q: What are the sleeping facilities?
A: Students stay in bunkhouses, segregated by gender. Each bunkhouse has two adult chaperones of the same gender. There are three to four rooms in each bunkhouse, plus a common area and a student bathroom. Each room sleeps 6 - 14 on twin-size bunk beds, dorm style. Campers must provide their own bedding (sleeping bags or blankets and pillows).
Q: My student attends an academy program. Will all the 6th graders from my student's site be housed together?
OR
Q: My student is home schooled and does not attend an academy-based program. I'm concerned my student may become lonely, not knowing the other students at 6th Grade Camp. How does JCS ensure that everyone has a great time?
A: When assigning bunkhouse rooms and trail groups, our goal is to intermix all the JCS students so that new friendships can be made and no one feels left out - that's what camp is all about! Students who attend an academy program will find some classmates from their academy in their room or trail group, as well as classmates from the other academies, as well as home study students. There are numerous "mixer" and "ice breaker" activities that help foster introductions and new friendships. Our students are housed in rooms within gender-specific bunkhouses, with common areas where your student will have plenty of time to catch up with friends during free time.
Q: Will my student be interacting with students from other schools?
A: JCS will be sharing the IROEC facility with one or more other schools also attending 6th Grade Camp. JCS Students will interact with students from the other schools during meal times only. JCS bunkhouses and JCS trail groups are specific to JCS students only.
Q: What are the restroom/shower facilities?
A: Each bunkhouse has its own large restroom/shower facility. Each restroom (male and female) includes a number of private toilet stalls, and private showers with private changing rooms. Adults in each bunkhouse use a separate bathroom facility from the students.
Q: What are the safety/security precautions?
A: The IROEC Facility is a locked, private camp facility. After the camp registration time, the camp facility is closed. We use the "buddy system" throughout the camp, and students are never alone with an adult. Also, JCS staff will not release students at the end of camp to anyone except the student's parent or their designated adult driver. If your student will be picked up by someone other than their parent, you will need to have the driver complete a JCS Driver Authorization form.

The only time IROEC staff will not be supervising them in when students use the bathroom or shower, but they will be close by if assistance is needed.
